The Maggie Awards are an initiative of the Manitoba Magazine Publishers’ Association (MMPA). The awards have been created to increase awareness of the magazine industry in Manitoba and to recognize leadership and excellence.
In 2016, the Maggie Awards will be presented in nine categories encompassing writing and design work in consumer, literary and business-to-business/trade/association magazines. The work must have been published in the 2015 calendar year.
Awards will be presented on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 during an awards luncheon at the Red River College Main Dining Hall, Exchange District Campus, 160 Princess Street, Winnipeg.

CATEGORY GUIDELINES
Entries will be judged in four groups. The award categories within the groups are as follows:
CREATIVE WRITING:
- Best Poem or Suite of Poems: Entry may consist of one, two or three poems by one author, and must not exceed five pages in total. Consideration will be given to the originality, creativity and quality of the writing.
- Best Short Fiction: Consideration will be given to the originality, creativity and quality of the writing. Entry must not exceed 10,000 words.
EDITORIAL WRITING:
- Best Business Profile: A feature article that provides the reader with insights into the history, character, goals and ambitions of a company or individual. The award recognizes comprehensive content and quality of writing. Entry must not exceed 5,000 words, including sidebars.
- Best Editorial Feature: A feature article on any subject matter that is relevant to the magazine’s stated aims and identified readership. Primary consideration will be given to comprehensive content and quality of writing. Entry must not exceed 5,000 words, including sidebars.
- Best Regular Column or Department: The column or department must be relevant to the magazine’s stated aims and identified readership. It has to have run a minimum of three times during 2015. The column or department can either be written by the same person or will have content that follows a consistent theme or topic.
DESIGN:
- Best Cover – Illustration: Consideration will be given to the cover’s overall design, including the concept and quality of the illustration, placement and quality of cover lines, relevance of the cover illustration to content, and the stated aims of the publication. The entry information must identify whether the illustration is an original work for the magazine or a reproduction. Credit must be given to the creator of the illustration or concept.
- Best Cover – Photography: Consideration will be given to the cover’s overall design, including the quality of the photograph(s), the quality of cover lines, the relevance of the cover photograph(s) to the magazine’s content, and the stated aims of the publication. The entry information must indicate whether the photograph(s) was taken specifically for the magazine or acquired elsewhere. Credit must be given to the original source.
- Best Editorial Feature – Consideration will be given to an article’s overall design, including the quality of the photographs/illustrations, the layout of the copy and photographs/illustrations, the placement of the headlines and photo cutlines, and the overall visual creativity and appeal that makes it an easy, pleasing read. Credit must be given to the art director or designer.
Magazine of the Year
Magazine of the Year considers the entire magazine, based on the quality of content and presentation. Judges will ask the question: Does the magazine’s content and presentation fulfill the editorial mandate?
Submissions must include four hard copies of each issue entered, with a minimum of two issues and maximum of three issues from 2015.
ENTRY PROCESS
Who can enter
The awards are open to magazine publishers whose main editorial office is located in Manitoba.
Timeline
Closing date is Monday, May 30, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. DEADLINE EXTENDED! New closing date …Wednesday June 1st 5pm
Multiple entries
Multiple categories may be entered. A separate and complete entry form must be submitted for each entry.
Cost of entries
- 1 entry $40; 2 entries $60; 3 or more entries, $25 each.
Payment of entries
Payment of entry fee(s) must be made the same day of entry via a cheque made payable to Manitoba Magazine Publishers’ Association and mailed to (or dropped off at):

Entry payment may also be made via phoned-in credit card authorization to MMPA executive director Grant Nordman at 204 940 2712.
Submissions will not be forwarded to judges until payment is received. All entries may be displayed as part of the annual MMPA Maggie Awards event on Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
Finalists will be notified approximately one week prior to the event.

Entries must be in PDF format and emailed to [email protected] .
PDF pages should be no larger than 2 MB per page. Each entry must be emailed separately.
Hard copies of issues entered in to the Magazine of the Year category can be mailed or dropped off to:
